Click-to-WhatsApp ads vs lead forms: which gets better leads in India?

·7 min read·Meta Ads

A lead form collects a phone number from someone who tapped twice, while a click-to-WhatsApp ad starts a conversation the person chose to begin, so WhatsApp tends to bring fewer, warmer leads that only pay off if someone replies within minutes; run both for a client, judge them on cost per qualified lead rather than cost per lead, and keep whichever the client's team can actually follow up.

Ask an Indian agency which works better for lead generation, an Instant Form or a click-to-WhatsApp ad, and you'll get a confident answer either way. Most of the guides online are written by companies that sell WhatsApp tools, so they reach the same conclusion. The honest answer depends on the client's offer and, above all, on who replies to the leads and how fast.

How the two actually differ

  • A lead form (Instant Form) opens inside Facebook or Instagram, fills in the person's name and number from their profile, and submits. The person never leaves the app. Quick to fill, which is why it brings volume and why many leads don't remember filling it.
  • A click-to-WhatsApp ad opens a WhatsApp chat with the business, usually with a pre-filled first message. The person has to send it. A lead here is a conversation the person started, on their own phone, with the business's name at the top.

That one extra step is the whole difference. Fewer people send a WhatsApp message than submit a form, and the ones who do have done something a little deliberate.

A form lead gave you a number. A WhatsApp lead started a conversation. The second is worth more only if someone answers it.

What click-to-WhatsApp needs to work

  • Someone replying fast. A conversation left for hours goes cold the same way a form lead does. If the client's team can't reply within minutes during business hours, a form plus a calling team may serve them better.
  • The right WhatsApp setup. A small business can run these ads to a WhatsApp Business app number. Anything beyond a few chats a day (automated first replies, several agents, sending leads to a CRM) needs the WhatsApp Business Platform through a provider.
  • A way to count results. Meta can see that a conversation started, but not whether the person turned into a site visit or a sale. Without sending that back, Meta optimises for cheap conversations, the same trap as cheap form leads.

On cost, WhatsApp Business Platform messages are priced per message, but when someone messages a business from a click-to-WhatsApp ad, the business's messages for the next 72 hours are not charged, according to WhatsApp's own pricing page. That window is the time to qualify the lead and book the call or visit.

Which suits which client

  • Click-to-WhatsApp tends to suit offers where a buyer has questions before committing and the client has people to answer: real estate site visits, coaching admissions, clinics, local services.
  • Lead forms suit clients with a calling team that works through lists, offers simple enough to qualify in two questions, and campaigns that need volume. Use the Higher intent form type and a qualifying question to keep quality up. See how to get leads out of Meta lead forms.

How to test them for a client

  • Run both at the same time, to the same audience, with the same offer and creative, so the only difference is where the lead lands.
  • Agree with the client's team how each lead will be judged (qualified, visit booked, sale) and record it for both.
  • Compare cost per qualified lead, not cost per lead. WhatsApp will almost always look more expensive per lead; the question is what each costs per lead that turned into something.
  • Give it a few weeks and enough leads on each side to judge. A handful of leads tells you nothing either way. See how to A/B test a Meta ad set without fooling yourself.
